Carbon County court - drug pleas
Four people entered guilty pleas on Tuesday in Carbon County court to drug counts before Judge Joseph J. Matika.
Drug saleSteven Michael Mika, 31, of Weissport, pleaded to one count of criminal use of a communication facility.He was arrested on Oct. 15, 2014, following an ongoing drug-dealing investigation, which led to a controlled buy set up by Mahoning Township police involving a confidential informant. The drug transaction occurred along Second Street in Lehighton involving heroin and Mika making the sale.Matika deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.Other pleasOther defendants entering pleas included:Andrew J. Manno, 35, of Summit Hill, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance-marijuana. In exchange for the plea a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance was dropped.Manno was arrested on July 7 when borough police responded to his residence at 116 E. Amidon St., for a complaint. On scene police found Manno growing 13 marijuana plants in a rear bedroom.Manno told Matika he was "self-medicating" for a mental health issue. Matika said he never heard of someone with mental health issues self-medicating with marijuana.Manno said he is getting help for his mental health problems and is scheduling counseling sessions.He told Matika, "I'm glad things went the way they did. I got the help I needed."Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered him to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and render 50 hours of community service.Stephen K. Terry, 20, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested by Lansford police on April 3 along Bertsch Street following a vehicle stop.Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered him to render 25 hours of community service. On two motor vehicle code violations he was fined a total of $225 and costs.William M. Tworkowsky, 22, of Danielsville, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Dec. 18, 2015, by state police at Lehighton at the Eastern Boat Launch area at Beltzville State Park. He was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by troopers and had the paraphernalia on him. He is currently an inmate in the Lehigh County prison facing a parole violation proceeding. It was also noted he has five pending criminal cases in Carbon County.Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered he render 25 hours of community service when paroled.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
