Grant funds equipment for Lehighton fire company

The Lehighton Volunteer Fire Department has purchased lifesaving equipment with a $2,000 donation from Mauch Chunk Community Trust.

The department is now outfitted with two more life support kits, oxygen administration kit, two new stretchers and the “Original Ferno

K.E.D.” This piece of equipment is for removing and immobilizing patients from vehicle accidents. The small and flexible model immobilizes the torso, neck and head during the extraction while minimizing risks of further injury.According to firefighter and department treasurer Joe Flickinger, “If it weren’t for partnerships with the businesses and organization in the community we wouldn’t be able to provide the level of care we do.”“MCT is more than supportive of us,” said Flickinger. “They have donated thousands of dollars over the years. From emergency response equipment to the kits we just purchased that were utilized at the coaster race for Lehighton’s 150th celebration.”Lehighton branch manager, Pearl Sheckler, it’s important to support the local team.“We like to give back to the community. We are very community oriented,” she said. “If our bank’s on fire we need them there so it’s very important to support them.”Flickinger said, “We’re always looking for grants to help offset the costs for the residents we serve.”“Any time the community can help us out in our efforts to help resident’s is great. Then we can spend more time on training instead of fundraising. It’s better for everyone,” said Lehighton Fire Department Chief Patrick Mriss.“A quarter of the department will be using this new equipment. This is the first time we have oxygen to use during rescues.”Sheckler said the bank is more than happy to help the department.“They’re great guys and they’re all volunteers. Anyone who volunteers to save lives, that goes above and beyond,” she said.
