Jim Thorpe woman admits to assaults
A Jim Thorpe woman pleaded guilty on Thursday in Carbon County court to assaulting a family member and then later, at a hospital, assaulting an employee of the facility.
Kathleen Kattner, 46, pleaded guilty before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to one count each of aggravated assault and simple assault (with a deadly weapon enhancement) for an incident on Nov. 29, 2015.State police at Lehighton responded to 38 Hollyberry Lane, Penn Forest Township, for a domestic dispute. On scene, officers learned that Kattner had been in an altercation with her brother. During the altercation she allegedly pointed a Colt pistol at her brother and also threatened to commit suicide with the gun.She was very combative and had to be taken into custody with force.Troopers took her to the Lehighton hospital because of her demeanor. While at the hospital she caused a disturbance in the emergency room. During the disturbance she bit one of the hospital nurses on the arm. Lehighton police charged her with aggravated assault.Nanovic noted the plea agreement made between Kattner, her attorney and the district attorney's office called for a state prison term to be imposed, at which point Kattner said to the court, "You do need to impose a state term."Nanovic responded, "The plea stipulation calls for a state sentence."Court-appointed defense attorney Robert S. Frycklund said his client "knowledges she has severe drug and alcohol problems and mental health issues."He said his client is asking for a time-served sentence and wants to get help for her problems. However, Nanovic asked if the commonwealth would deviate from the plea bargain. Assistant District Attorney Brian Gazo said it would not. He said the agreement was made with other serious charges dropped. He said a state sentence was agreed to by the defendant.Nanovic accepted the pleas but deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office prepare a presentence investigation report.
