Fire destroys three homes

Houses at 228 to 240 Third St. in Weatherly took the brunt of the damage after an early morning fire Saturday.

Officials sifting through rubble after daybreak said the cause of the fire is still unclear and the scene is still being evaluated."It's undetermined," said police Chief Brian Markovchick of Weatherly at the scene Saturday.Markovchick said the fire is still under investigation.Markovchick said six residents were displaced in the 2 a.m. conflagration and no injuries were reported.The names of the families affected were not available.The fast-moving, three-alarm fire drew fire apparatus and first responders from Carbon, Schuylkill and Luzerne counties.Two 1800s-era, wood-frame homes at the corner of Third and Pardee streets were gutted, with both turned into blackened shells.Neighboring houses and those across the street sustained various amounts of damage, some with melted siding, melted window blinds and other heat and smoke-related damage.At least one car parked on Pardee Street was damaged by falling debris.Another fire shortly later in nearby Freeland caused damage to a mobile home.
