Palmerton Library hosting book sale, student art show
Things can heat up in August, but it's cool at the Palmerton Area Library.
The month will kick off with the annual Giant Basket Auction & Book Sale. It will run from Aug. 5 through Sept. 10.Diane Danielson, the director of the library, said they will have about 25 baskets of all different themes.The baskets are provided by the members of the board of directors and the Friends of the Library."There will also be some gift cards to local businesses and a family pass to the Palmerton Memorial Pool for the 2017 season," she said.In order to win a basket, people will purchase tickets for 50 cents each or three for $1 and then put the tickets in bags beside the baskets they would like to win. One ticket will be drawn from each bag and the winner will be announced.Patrons can buy a library tote bag for $5 and fill it for free one time with items from the basement book sale, she said.A Student Art Show will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 6. All types of art and photos by children ages 6 through 18 will be accepted. Prizes will be awarded in two age categories. In order to enter, the artwork should be brought to the library by Aug. 4. Refreshments will be provided by Friends of the Palmerton Library.Let's not forget the fifth annual Palmerton Area Library Golf Tournament to be held on Aug. 26 at Mahoning Valley Country Club."It's a four-person scramble format," Danielson said.Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9.The golf tournament is $80 to enter or $20 for those who just want to come for the lunch at the country club.Included in the tournament is a continental breakfast and barbecue lunch buffet. There will also be several contests including: pot of gold, putting contest, top two teams, closest to the pin, longest drive for men and women, and hole in one. Prizes will vary from golf certificates, golf supplies, to gift cards and other donated items.The tournament will take place rain or shine.The Summer Reading Contest's Reading Chain continues to expand across the gallery railing. Links will be added throughout the month and won't stop until Sept. 1.Many clubs and activities take a vacation during the summer, but many others don't. These include:• Knitting Club - meets from 6 to 8 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. Free and open to anyone interested in knitting and crocheting at all skill levels.• Yoga Classes - every Saturday morning at 9. Call the teacher at 570-436-1762 for more information or stop in for class.• Sew What Quilt Guild - meets at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. New members and visitors are always welcome. Please use the side door.• Blue Mountain Fiber Guild - Exploring all things related to fiber arts (spinning, weaving, etc.) No sheep necessary to join. Check it out at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.• Our Family History - Learn how to research family history. Here's a chance to find out from 6 to 7:30 p.m. second Tuesday of each month.• Library Board of Directors - meets at 4 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month. Meetings are open to the public.
