Farmers market offers fresh produce in Lansford

Residents of Lansford Borough can now purchase fresh local produce without having to leave town, thanks to a new farmers market.

The Valley Road Farm in Walker Township has been holding a weekly farmers market on Fridays along Tunnel Street, just across the street from Lansford Borough hall. The market is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m."We do cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, eggplant, raspberries. Everything's seasonal," Jill Paea said.Paea and farm owner Louanne Bachert say they use organic products and try to farm naturally, although the farm is not officially certified organic."We try not to use any harsh sprays. When you come to my farm there's lots of weeds. It's organic, for sure," Bachert said.Last week, they were just rolling out their locally grown peaches. Local nectarines and plums will follow soon. When they don't have a certain crop on their farm, they try to work with farmers who grow their produce responsibly."We try to raise things naturally, and we try to work with people who have the same philosophies," Bachert said. The farmers market is expected to run on Fridays throughout the fall. Last week, a steady stream of customers walked or drove up and parked in one of several parking spaces available around the tent set up for the market. Bachert said that the reaction from residents has been positive."People like to buy their food fresh from the farmer, and see where the food is coming from," she said.
