State police report the victim of today's drowning in the Schuylkill River is a 26-year old Allentown man. Reports are he entered the river from a beach and attempted to swim across when he went under.
Emergency responders were hampered by heavy traffic at the remote scene. Some estimate as many as 500 people were on or near the river.
Another major problem was a language barrier.
Rescuers report although they were searching for the body many refused to leave the water.
Finally state and Tilden township police ordered everyone not only out of the water but out of the scene. Many moved their cars out onto Route 61 only to try to walk into the site again.
Route 61 was reduced to one lane. A number of young men atop and jumping from the Rock defied police orders, refusing to leave.
The scene is near the intersection of Blue Mountain Road and Route 61 just south of Port Clinton.
