Northern Valley will play for title
The last time that Northern Valley walked off the baseball field at Parkland High School, it was a slow, heads-down walk that seemed to take an eternity.
When it left that same field Sunday night, there was a definite bounce in the step and heads were high after beating South Parkland 3-2 to force a deciding game to determine the champion of the Lehigh Valley Legion League.Ben Cordova, who was the losing pitcher in Friday night's 7-6 loss to the Trojans found a little revenge in the form of a two-run triple that tied the game in the top of the sixth. With runners on first and second and the center fielder shifted well toward right field, lifted a long fly ball just to the left of center field that bounced to the outfield fence."On the first pitch, I realized that there was a pretty big gap in center field. I was just looking for a pitch that I could hit and he threw me a fastball that was in the zone where I could push right where I wanted it," said Cordova.John Taylor had reached on an error with one out in the inning and Kole Rodrigues followed with a basehit through the middle to put runners on first and second for Cordova's drive. Pitcher Michael Jenkins then threw a wild pitch, allowing Cordova to dash home from third with the go-ahead run.Josh Williamson went the distance for Northern Valley, and was in command in pretty much every inning except the third when South Parkland picked up three of their five hits and also got a bases-loaded walk to put two runs on the board.Williamson settled in and relied on the defense behind him to keep the Trojans in check."I know I have a great defense behind me that is going to make the plays. Plus, we've been hitting the ball well, so I knew we were going to put up some runs. It took us a while to get on the board, but I knew we were going to put up some runs," said Williamson. In between their loss to South Parkland Friday night that sent them into the loser's bracket of the playoffs and Sunday's win, the Chargers beat West Allentown 1-0 to advance to the finals, needing to defeat South Parkland twice to become league champions."We lost a tough one Friday, and I think that really stuck with a lot of our guys," said Cordova. "That was a game that we really wanted to win and I think that we showed that coming back here after being down and putting together a rally against a pretty good team. I think that game was what pushed us to get a win here."ON THE BOARD... Sunday marked Northern Valley's first victory over South Parkland in four tries this season. In addition to dropping Friday night's game to South Parkland, Northern Valley lost both of the regular season games against the Trojans, falling 8-4 and 7-2.UP NEXT...
