Volunteers of all ages chipped in Saturday morning to prepare the Lansford Community Garden for another successful year of planting.
The garden was plentiful with flowers, vegetables and tiny helping hands as children were taught the values of community service.Grace Community Church’s Kids Club teacher, Jodi Mika, founded the garden in 2014, hoping to teach children life lessons by getting them out and involved in their community. “The garden teaches the children respect, hard work and pride in their town” Mika stated. The community garden is a non-profit project funded by donations made by members of the community. Members of the Grace Community Church sponsored a vast majority of the flowers and vegetables found on the property. Organizations such as Community Bank and the Lansford Fire Company have also helped with the growth and expansion of the garden.Every Tuesday the vegetables are collected by the children and donated to the people in the town. Children can go door to door with baskets of vegetables. Members of the community are also invited to come and take what they need from the garden including fresh vegetables and herbs. This year the group plans on holding events including kids club, craft nights and family friendly cook outs to get the community more involved with the garden. The garden is located at the corner of Bertsch and Center Street in Lansford and is open to the public.
Colorful flowers donated by members of the Lansford Community wait to be planted.
