Lehighton area remembers veterans

Nola Barilla knows Memorial Day is about more than picnics and barbecues.

Having just completed her junior year at Lehighton Area High School, Barilla was the guest speaker Sunday at a Memorial Day service at St. Paul's Union Church Cemetery at Big Creek."The real meaning is honoring those men and women who died in active military service," Barilla said. "There are many ways to remember those soldiers, including recognizing everyday symbols such as the American flag, paper and coin currency depicting our nation's leaders, our national bird the eagle and our national anthem."The ceremony at St. Paul's was just one of several held Sunday in the Lehighton area.Other sites included the Parryville Cemetery, Bunker Hill Cemetery, Jewish Cemetery, Long Run Cemetery, Franklin Heights Cemetery, St. Matthew's Church Cemetery, St. John's Church Cemetery, Zimmerman's Cemetery, Mahoning Township Veterans' monument, Peter Nothstein grave site, Ben Salem Church Cemetery, Dinkey Memorial Church, Packerton Cemetery and the Packerton Veterans' Memorial. The Lehighton United Veterans Organization organized the services. While the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band played a musical selection, guests placed flowers on the graves of veterans.
