Charges filed against driver in truck crash
Charges against the driver of the third tractor-trailer crash in Nesquehoning in April have been announced.
Nesquehoning police said that summary offenses were filed against Abdullahi Mohamed, 57, of 5555 Arturo Court, Apt. A, Columbus, Ohio, for his part in a rig crash on Route 93 coming into the borough on April 2.He faces 11 counts of safety violations with his tractor-trailer, as well as careless driving, failing to stop at the posted truck pull-off area and speeding.Officer Timothy Wuttke said that state police, upon their inspection of the vehicle after the crash, found multiple brakes not working properly or at all, the tread on multiple tires was low and there was an issue with the air brake system.Mohamed was able to maneuver his rig onto the runaway truck ramp after his brakes failed, but due to the speed he was traveling, the 825-foot gravel ramp, which was designed to allow speeding vehicles to "sink" and gradually stop, failed and the rig sped up the ramp and continued about 50 yards into the woods before getting wedged between two pine trees.Emergency crews from Nesquehoning had to extricate Mohamed, who was still inside the cab of the rig when they arrived. He was taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained during the crash.A summary trial before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek has been scheduled for 9:30 a.m. June 15.Charges against the two rig drivers in the string of crashes in Nesquehoning from March 31 to April 2 were announced last week. Both Yiadom Boayke, 32, of 111 Freight St., Apt. 19, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and Phalante Dutervil, 50, of 920 Spofford Ave. Apt. 8, Elizabeth, New Jersey, face numerous charges for causing crashes with their rigs after they failed to stop at the top of the Broad Mountain at the posted area.In both crashes, Boayke and Dutervil missed the runaway truck ramp and barreled through the routes 93-209 intersection, narrowly missing passing motorists before crashing their vehicles.
