Weatherly Borough Council has signaled that they will take possession of the borough's historic, vacant school building if residents can raise the money.
After one vote failed, council voted 6-1 to show support for residents looking to raise money for the school.
Some members were swayed by a large showing from members of the public who filled their meeting Monday night.
The 1915 CM Schwab school is currently being marketed by a bank that foreclosed on its previous owner last year. According to mayor/council president Tom Connors, the vote needed to happen tonight because the bank says they are willing to work with the borough if residents have a plan to raise money and the borough is willing to accept it.
Borough council initially voted 4-3 against accepting the school Monday.
But instead of closing the meeting after the vote, Connors allowed members of the public to continue criticizing the members who voted against, even joining in himself.
After about 15 minutes of tension-filled debate, Richie said he was ready to change his vote to support those looking to save the school.
"To see the way you people are, this concerned about it, I think you can do it," he said.
