Tamaqua Police have filed charges against Joseph Robert Holland, 34, of 115 W. Rowe St., Tamaqua, in connection with an April 24 incident.

Acting on a tip, Tamaqua Police went to 71 Bowe St., Tamaqua, at 9:15 a.m. in an attempt to apprehend Holland, who had several active warrants for his arrest. Holland had already left the residence and was reportedly driving a silver, spray painted Ford Taurus.A few minutes later, an officer saw the Taurus traveling west on Broad Street. When the lights and siren were activated on the cruiser, the Ford pulled to the side and Holland stuck his head out of the window. As the officer approached, Holland began moving around, appearing to be trying to reach something under the driver’s seat. With Holland described as armed and dangerous in connection with multiple prior arrests, the officer approached slowly. Holland sped off, ignoring commands to show his hands and then to stop. The officer called for back up, then followed Holland as he turned from one street to another, finally heading east on West Rowe Street, a one-way westbound street. The Taurus skidded into a parking lot behind the Wells Fargo Bank, with Holland jumping out and scrambling up the rocky, wooded area between Rowe and Lafayette streets. He appeared to be carrying something in his hand.Units from Rush, West Penn and Kline Township responded to the area to help, but Holland was able to elude capture.A preliminary search was made of the vehicle, which had been left running. Inside were a black air soft pellet gun, replicating a 1911 .45 caliber pistol; a wallet, containing several credit cards and a Massachusetts ID card in the name of Robert Holland; and several small bags such as those used to store heroin.A check of the license plate on the Ford came back to a 2000 GMC pick up truck, registered to Holland. A check of the vehicle identification number determined the Ford was owned by a Perkasie man. the car was not reported as stolen.Holland faces charges of fleeing/eluding police, reckless endangerment, driving the wrong way on a one-way road, reckless driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving with a suspended license, and driving without insurance.A warrant has been issued for his arrest.Anyone with information may contact Tamaqua Police at 570-668-5000.
