Late rally lifts Northwestern
The Northwestern girls' softball team never doubted themselves on Monday afternoon, somehow knowing they could come from behind to score a win.
Down to their final at-bat and with their backs against the wall, the Tigers staged a rally to roar back and pick up a Colonial League victory against Salisbury, 6-5."I just knew it," Northwestern's Brooke Wehr said. "I mean, once we picked up the momentum there in the bottom of the seventh, it just carried us the rest of the way. This was for our Seniors on Senior Night."Alyssa Cinquemani started the seventh-inning rally by legging out a single on the very first pitch she saw from Falcons' pitcher Brooke Rogers. Then, Lydia Danner immediately reached on an error after the Falcons' second baseman had no time to make a play, due to some speedy Northwestern runners.Soon, Claire O'Dea laced a grounder to shortstop and the Falcons' Anna Bishop fully extended to get a glove on it. But, once again, Bishop had no time to make a play because the three speedy Tigers' were standing on a bag safely. After that was when the Tigers' Brooke Wehr took things into her own hands, despite sustaining a jammed finger earlier in the game. Instead, Wehr tolerated the pain and made things happen by lacing a single to right field, which soon plated Cinquemani and Danner. However, the Falcons tried to catch O'Dea at third for the final out, which then would have sent the game into extra innings. Unfortunately for Salisbury, an attempt to peg O'Dea was overthrown. Without hesitation, Northwestern head coach Josh Zimmerman waived O'Dea toward home plate to try and put an end to the game.It turned out to be a great call by the second-year coach, as O'Dea crossed the plate standing up, rather than having to worry about sliding across home plate to beat out any potential tag."Hey, I would be lying to be saying that I wasn't a little bit nervous there," Zimmerman said. "Not that I didn't think we had the ability to do it; our girls finally came out with a little bit of a mentality where we're never down and out, and we proved it. And, we did so with two outs."We got two outs real quick. Then, we kept putting the ball in play and when you do that, good things happen. We were able to chase those winning runs home, and it all happened with two outs."TIGHT RACE ...Northwestern remains in the thick of things in the Colonial League playoff race with the victory, as they hold a current league record of 10-5 and remain in fourth, while the Falcons drop to 9-6, and sit in fifth. Northwestern still has a chance to move up with three games to go.EYE OF THE TIGER ...Brooke Wehr led the Tigers with two singles, a run scored and three RBIs.
