Two face drug charges after fleeing police

Tamaqua Police filed charges against two men after an incident on Route 309 on April 14.

A motorist traveling south on Route 309, at 2:28 p.m., contacted the Schuylkill County Communications Center after he saw a fireball flare in the gold 1997 Pontiac traveling directly in front of him. The witness said the Sunbird had two male occupants and the men lit something that seemed to blow up in their faces. A torch was thrown from the Pontiac, in the area of the Jeep dealership.Police responded and found the Sunbird as it was turning from Mauch Chunk onto Greenwood Street, where the driver abruptly pulled to the right and parked. When the occupants saw police, the passenger jumped out and fled. The driver, later identified as John Russop, 53, of Tamaqua, also tried to flee. Russop tossed an item next to a parked utility trailer before obeying the officer’s command to stop.Looking in the area next to the trailer, the officer found a plastic bag containing suspected illegal drugs.A neighbor, who was on his porch, told police the man who fled had tossed something on to the top of a dumpster that was parked in front of the utility trailer. A check of the dumpster found a syringe laying on top of a cardboard box. The second man was identified as John Smith II, 26, of Tamaqua.Russop said the vehicle wasn’t his so he couldn’t give them consent to conduct a vehicle search. He was lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville as there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The plastic bag found near the trailer contained suspected heroin and methamphetamine, marijuana, several pills and numerous wax baggies. The Pontiac was impounded and taken to a secure location by Hope’s Towing of Tamaqua. Police were able to obtain a warrant to search the car and found a canister of butane fuel on the driver’s side floor, a lighter in the center console and a pill bottle containing two different pills in the glove compartment. The trunk yielded a black satchel containing baggies, a spoon, rubber bands, a shoe lace, a lighter, cotton swabs, syringes and a bag containing a white crystalline substance suspected to be meth.Smith was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.Russop was charged with possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, failure to use proper turning signals, driving a vehicle with a suspended registration and careless driving.
