A 21-year-old Philadelphia man was killed Saturday night when the car he was riding in crashed on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and he was ejected out the driver’s side rear window.
Derek Charles Mitchell was one of four passengers in the 2010 Ford Crown Victoria, which was the only vehicle involved in the wreck at mile marker 82.3 in Penn Forest Township.State police at the Pocono barracks said James Jamal Walker, 20, of Norristown, lost control of the car, which was headed northbound, around 7:17 p.m.The vehicle went up an embankment and came back on the road when Mitchell was ejected from the rear seat.Police said emergency medical technicians tried to revive him at the scene but were unsuccessful.Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene by a Carbon County deputy coroner.Two people were flown by Penn Star and MedEvac helicopters to a Lehigh Valley area trauma center.Police did not name the three additional passengers, and said an investigation is ongoing.
