Cranking out some good times

Abe Froman has nothing on the group of guys that meets every year in Tresckow.

Froman, a fictional character in the 1986 movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," was known as the "Sausage King of Chicago" in the film. Each year toward the end of winter a couple of dozen guys get together and make sausage in Carlo Collevechio's garage in Tresckow. A lot of sausage. In between the good-natured ribbing, stogie chomping and boilo sipping, the group stuffed and packaged more than 800 pounds of Italian sausage in three varieties: Sweet, hot and garlic flavored.Jim Clauser of Jim Thorpe started the tradition in 2004, but has been making sausage for decades."It's just a way of blowing off steam after a long winter," Clauser said. There are three sausage stuffing machines set up in the garage, each manned by two guys. One cranks and one guides the sausage into the all-natural casing. They continue cranking until the reservoir is empty, the casing runs out, or there is a break in the casing. If the casing breaks too often, the guy guiding the casing will get a bit of good-natured verbal abuse from the others in the room."Pay attention to what you're doing.""You're talking too much."After a few laughs the process starts again. This goes on all day until more than 800 pounds has been stuffed or packaged loose.

Carlo Collevechio of Tresckow shows off a bit while stuffing sausage Saturday afternoon. People from around the region gathered for an annual outing to make 800 pounds of sausage Saturday, and have a rousing good time. BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS
