SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Aimee Oertner's outstanding college basketball career at Army came to an end on Friday in the NCAA women's basketball tournament.
Alexis Peterson scored 24 points to help the fourth-seeded Syracuse Orange coast to a 73-56 win over Army in a first round game.Oertner (above, right), a Northern Lehigh High School graduate, scored five points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out an assist. She also had a pair of steals and a blocked shot in 17 minutes of action. But as Army coach Dave Magarity had feared a day earlier, his team had no answer in handling Syracuse's athleticism and its daunting defensive pressure. After Oertner scored Army's first basket on a layup 68 seconds in, the Black Knights proceeded to hit just four of their next 20 attempts in closing the first half trailing 39-14.Briana Day scored 11 points and added 12 rebounds for the Orange (26-7), who matched a program record for victories. The Black Knights (29-3) had a 19-game winning streak snapped and have now lost the opening round game in each of their three tournament appearances.
