Monroe man faces trial in brutal attack
A former Monroe County man will go to trial on charges that he tried to kill his girlfriend's mother in a brutal attack last June.
Shawn Fitzgerald waived a preliminary hearing on homicide and other felony charges on Monday. He had to be extradited back to Pennsylvania after being arrested in Louisiana in January. He is accused in a June 2015 attack where he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend's mother in the neck with a "Rambo" knife, and attempted to choke her to death. Police said that the attack occurred after Fitzgerald, the girlfriend and her mother were arguing about finances and household chores at the home they shared on Kunkletown Road in Hamilton Township.Police have withheld the victim's name.Fitzgerald eluded police up until this January, when he was found and arrested near his grandmother's home in Louisiana.According to a criminal complaint, Fitzgerald and the daughter took the victim to Pocono Medical Center around 1:40 a.m. June 26, shortly after the attack occurred. The woman was bleeding profusely from a large laceration on her neck, police said. The victim told police that she and her daughter had been arguing with Fitzgerald about household chores and money.A scuffle ensued in which Fitzgerald tried to get down a narrow hallway to the woman's bedroom, where she had some money stored. The victim told police that she brandished a long, "Rambo" knife toward Fitzgerald because she was threatened by him.She said Fitzgerald calmed down momentarily, but then took the knife and held it to her throat. In the ensuing struggle, Fitzgerald pushed the knife into the woman's neck, causing what police called a "large laceration."The woman fell back, clutching her neck. Her daughter took the knife from Fitzgerald. The woman recalled Fitzgerald telling her daughter "She's not dead yet," then attempting to choke her, directly over the stab wound. After waiving a preliminary hearing on Thursday, Fitzgerald will await formal arraignment on the charges before going to trial.
