World War II vet is Lansford 'Person of Year'
A World War II veteran who is a member of the Last Man's Club of American Legion Post 123, Lansford, was honored as "Person of the Year" by the post and its Home Association on Sunday.
George W. Brimmer Jr., 91, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and other conflicts during WWII, received numerous plaques, certificates and especially words of praise during a dinner program held at the legion.About 75 people attended the program. Serving as master of ceremonies was Richard "Monk" Pogwist.Also present were numerous members of Brimmer's family, including a daughter, Gwyneth Collevechio; a son, George Brimmer III; and grandchildren Allison Fredericks, Sara Karnish, Morgan Brimmer, George Brimmer IV and Brittany Collevechio.Brimmer's wife, Mary Alice, died in 2011. The couple had been married for 60 years.The honoree graduated from Lansford High School in 1942 and was drafted into the U.S. Army on April 15, 1943. He served with the 17th Airborne Division, attaining the rank of Private First Class.Among the awards he received were the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Good Conduct medals, the Combat Infantry Badge and Glider Wings.Upon returning from military duty, he worked as a hoisting engineer for the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company and later gained employment with the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired in 1987.Besides being active in the fire department, he also held membership in the former F & A M Lodge of the Panther Valley.He worships at the First Congregational Church in Coaldale.Brimmer proudly explained that his father was a veteran of World War I.During the program, the Lansford Legion presented certificates of continuous service to Thomas Brimmer, Edward Gurka and George W. Kupec.Joe Greco, Lansford Fire Chief presented Brimmer with a plaque for being a member of the American Hose Company of Lansford for 70 years.Among those presenting awards to Brimmer were:• State Rep. Doyle Heffley, on behalf of the Pa. House of Representatives.• Carbon County Commissioners Tom J. Gerhard and William J. O'Gurek, representing the Carbon County Board of Commissioners.• Emmett P. McCall, Carbon County Recorder of Deeds, on behalf of State Sen. John D. Yudichak.• Henry "Hank" Desrosiers, director of the Carbon County Veterans Affairs.• Harry Wynn III, 30th District Senior Vice Commander of the American Legion.• Rose Mary Cannon, representing Lansford Borough Council.• Chris Ondrus, representing Lansford Alive.A POW/MIA remembrance ceremony was also conducted.
