Penn-Kidder hosts reading night

Thursday evening was Family Reading Night at the Penn-Kidder Campus of the Jim Thorpe Area School District. There were a number of family-oriented activities to keep children and their parents interested in reading.

Children were given a score card when they entered, and they were then asked to answer questions and make matches based on popular books in their age group. The students were given tickets for each correct answer, and at the end of the evening the tickets were collected. Friday during the school day, one ticket will be chosen and that student will win a Samsung tablet. There was also a book swap and book fair sponsored by the PTA.The evening was also an opportunity for parents to get information about the school's summer reading program.Reading specialist and event organizer Lorraine Robins said the program started four years ago with only four students. Last summer there were 75 students enrolled in the program. The district hopes to see that number increase. On March 16 the school will be holding a Math Night.

Chelsey Chase, a kindergartner at the Penn-Kidder school, chose "Toys Night Out" in the book swap. Chelsey loves to read and reads four books every night before bed. JUDY DOLGOS-KRAMER/TIMES NEWS
