Fit and fabulous: Spillane's gym offers fitness for all ages

Spillane's Fit is off to a running start.

The fitness studio on Delaware Avenue in Palmerton opened its doors a few months ago. Already, it has steady clients, a full schedule of workout classes and expansion plans. The 24/7 gym is operated by bodybuilding competitor Marty Vranicar, whose competition history includes Mr. USA, Mr. America, Mr. World and Mr. Universe, where he took first place 55 times, second place three times, and third place two times. Although retired from competition, Vranicar actively participates as a judge in Masters PA and Masters Nationally bodybuilding competitions. At Spillane's Fit, he routinely offers advice and assistance to anyone looking for guidance in the world of bodybuilding. Tommy Ellis of Palmerton is one such person. Ellis is training to compete in the Masters PA competition in Allentown and Masters Nationally in Pittsburgh. Vranicar is right there helping him to make the most of his training."He's very knowledgeable, lots of experience," Ellis said about Vranicar. And as far as the gym, "Phenomenal. Without a doubt, it's the best in the area. This place has more equipment in it than all of the Gold's Gyms in Allentown."Ellis said he's been lifting consistently for 25 years. Results take time."I might be training for something today that I won't see results in for three years," he said. "That's the reason there's work in workout."Vranicar said the gym sees all types of people from teens, athletes, men, women and seniors."It's more family fitness oriented here," he said. With the younger people, he thinks the ratio of men to women is about 70 percent to 30 percent. But it flips with the seniors. It's more like 70 percent women and 30 percent men."I don't know why," Vranicar said. The gym does offer Silver Sneakers and Silver Fit classes, which seem to be pretty popular. The classes are covered by Medicare, so the seniors don't have to pay for their membership.Vranicar said the seniors like to do cardio conditioning or full-body workout."They don't need a lot of resistance training," he said. "The women like the socializing, their channels to watch, the coffee bar, etc."For the younger crowd, the gym offers Yoga, Latin Rhythm, Boot Camp, Max Hiit, Butts & Gutts, Barre Yoga, Tabata Bootcamp, and Max Butts & Gutts. Some classes run in the morning, others in the evening and some on the weekends. The gym offers a full array of equipment for almost any workout interest including cardio, CrossFit, free weights and machines. When the teens come in, some athletes some not, Vranicar said he enjoys mentoring them. He and his brothers were mentored as youths by a couple fellows who were police officers and bodybuilders. They helped him get started in the world of bodybuilding."If I see them do an incorrect movement, I try to correct it," he said.Guiding is his goal, not being critical."They don't need another parent up their tailbone," Vranicar said. "I just joke with them."Benefiting the community is on the expansion plans. The gym is owned by Mark Stemler, who is buying the building next door where the bridal shop used to be.Vranicar said Stemler would like to expand the current building to encompass the lot and the former shop. He wants to put in an indoor pool, so the area high school swim teams have a place to practice.Vranicar said he doesn't know what the timeline is for the expansion.
