Bird feeder class at Chestnuthill Park a hit with families

Ages 1 to 70 attended a recent bird feeder workshop last week at the West End Chestnuthill Park, located on 115 in Brodheadsville.

Bernie Kozen, executive director of the parks and recreation program, said there was a large turnout because of the mild weather. Many will attend the bird feeder event then go outside to enjoy the park area.Grandmother, Linda Ardelean of Saylorsburg commented, "We are going over to the playground next."Her 11-year-old grandson Ellyot said, "I had fun making the bird feeders with my brother but I'm looking forward to the park."How do you make a birdfeeder? You select your pine cone, then tie a string to it. The trick to this is if you turn your pine cone upside-down, the birds can actually sit on the stems as they are eating.Next, you cover your pine cone in peanut butter, and last in bird seeds.Matthew Kramer, 5, said he liked the feeder, "because it looks cool!"Events like this bring "quality time" to families.Barbara Schlegel of Tobyhanna, brought her granddaughters Emma and Madeline Lamb, ages 6 and 4. She said, "The bird feeder event is great for the girls to do. It keeps them busy and they enjoy it."Debbie Booth of Saylorsburg attended the event with her grandsons, Ben, 8, and Matthew, 4. She recommended they walk on the trail before making bird feeders. Booth reminded the children that "squirrels sometimes get to the bird feeders before the birds."Tina Nicholas of Effort brought her three children: Benjamin, 5; Jackson, 2; and Emma, 1.Nicholas said, "This was a great weekend to have this event. The weather was nice enough to go outside afterward."Chestnuthill Park and Ross Township will sponsor an Easter egg hunt at 1 p.m. March 19 at Ross Township park.Register for events/activities at: 570-992-9733 or become part of Bernie Kozens' email list by emailing him at
