Ice patch causes two crashes in Tamaqua

Three people somehow escaped serious injuries Wednesday night after two vehicles lost control on an icy Route 309 in the area of the Taggertsville intersection.

James K. Albert, 34, of 70 Ye Old Dam Road, Tamaqua, was driving north at 8:05 p.m. when his 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander hit a patch of ice and lost traction on the road. Albert attempted to steer clear of southbound traffic and slid into an embankment, which caused the Outlander to flip over onto its roof.A second motorist, Nicole F. Bailey, 39, of 38A Hunter St., Tamaqua, was traveling behind Albert. When she saw the Mitsubishi spinning out of control, she applied her brakes, not realizing the highway was icy.Her Chevrolet Trail Blazer started to slide, right into the path of a southbound tractor trailer. She turned her steering wheel to the right, but overcompensated, sending the Chevy into the embankment, which caused it to flip over onto its roof.Bailey complained of pain on the left side of her body and was transported to St. Luke's Hospital-Miner's Campus in Coaldale in the Tamaqua Ambulance.Albert and a 10-year-old passenger in his car were bruised, but weren't transported to the hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, one by Zeigler's Towing, the other by Hope's Towing. Route 309 was closed for a short time while crews cleared the scene and the debris field.Tamaqua and Rush Township Police responded to the scene and were assisted by personnel from the Tamaqua Rescue Squad, Tamaqua Fire Department and Tamaqua Fire Police.PennDOT crews were notified of the icy situation, which was caused by heavy runoff coming from the mountainside, compounded by blocked storm drains.
