DUI charges filed in crashes

Rush Township police have filed charges in connection with two separate crashes that happened in early December.

Harold Elliot, 55, of Nesquehoning, is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident and traffic violations.Elliott was involved in an accident on Barnesville Drive, in the area of the Barnesville Post Office, at 5:33 p.m. Dec. 10.Driving east in a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox, he drifted into the westbound lane and hit the rear passenger side of a vehicle being driven west by 22-year-old Brittany Sell of Tamaqua.Elliott left the scene but officers located him a short time later on Pine Creek Drive. Tests taken reveal he had a blood alcohol content level of 0.207 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.Barry Markel, 44, of Hazle Township, faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. Markel was involved in a crash at 6:18 p.m. Dec. 11 at the intersection of Claremont Avenue and Tide Road.The driver of the vehicle he struck was injured and transported to the hospital.Markel's BAC registered 0.278 percent, more than three times the legal limit. He also faces charges of driving under DUI suspension and failure to stop at a red light.
