Rusted Root

Rusted Root and the Devon Allman Band will take the stage at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe Saturday. Doors open at 6 p.m., with show time beginning at 8.

Having collaborated for two decades, Rusted Root has honed the perfect combination of musical intuition, freedom and virtuosity, which has allowed the band to organically shape its music into its own distinct and undeniable vision. The members of Rusted Root are drawn to and have explored virtually every form of music, says Liz Berlin, one of the band's founding members."I am very inspired vocally by anything from Indian to African to Middle Eastern sounds and scales having grown up with a lot of Hebrew music," she says. With eight albums under its belt, over 3 million records sold and countless nights on the road, Rusted Root transcends age, cultures and musical styles."Rusted Root's current release, 'The Movement,' means a new work ethic to me," says founder and frontman Michael Glabicki."It's going from the industrial age to the individual spiritual age. I feel everyone should devote all their actions to all that is love, healing and pragmatic. We're seeing the growing pains of this right now … the world is split … some people are fearful and fighting it with all their might. Rusted Root is trying to help with this … this is our movement."Having collaborated with one another for two decades, Rusted Root has honed the perfect combination of musical intuition, freedom and virtuosity, which has allowed them to organically shape shift their music into their own distinct and undeniable vision."The Movement," released in 2012, is an energized and poetic collection of originals that capture the Pittsburgh-based unit at their best.Bassist and vocalist Patrick Norman says, "From the very first time we played music together, I knew we had something special. The music and the enjoyment of creating and playing with one another I feel is the driving force behind this band."The powerhouse ensemble's sweat-inducing and hypnotic live performances have allowed them to tour alongside everyone from Santana, Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page's reunion tour and countless others. The music of Rusted Root has been featured in the films "Ice Age," "Twister" and "Matilda," as well as TV shows like "New Girl," "Ally McBeal" and "Charmed."Devon Allman BandThe dirty blond hair is the same, the body posture is also the same, and there are touches in the voice that have a similar genetic connection, but Devon Allman has toiled long and hard to establish his own musical identity, separate from his legendary dad, Gregg Allman. In fact, Allman, who was raised by his mom (Shelley, not Cher) in Texas, took up the guitar on his own, and did not meet his father until he was a teenager."I was 16, and I sent him a really short letter saying, 'Hey, it's me. Here's where I'm at. I'm playing guitar.' I got a phone call three days later," says Allman.Soon after that phone call, the two met in the parking lot at The Fox Theater in St. Louis during a tour stop for the elder Allman.Growing up with his mom, Devon was listening to anything on the radio he could find. Often it was the Rolling Stones or Jimi Hendrix."I can remember listening to music at the age of 4 or 5. Something would come on the radio and I would always ask my mom who it was. She would say 'That's John Lennon' or 'That's Styx.'"One time 'Midnight Rider' came on, and I asked her 'Mom who's that?' and she said, 'That's your dad.'"One can never leave a name as famous as "Allman" very far behind. There are traces of his father in his soulful voice and his uncle Duane in his innovative guitar playing.According to Devon, the name both helps and hurts. There will always be fans that come to see him out of curiosity, "But they leave having a respect for the fact that I am my own entity."Coming up next weekendVoyage, The Ultimate Journey Band featuring Hugo performs at 8 p.m. Jan. 16.Hailed as "the best Journey Voyage has dominated America with more sold-out shows than any other tribute. The band also features Robby Hoffman, Greg Smith, Charlie Zeleny and Al Spinelli.Tickets for all concerts are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, the Penn's Peak Box Office and Roadies Restaurant and Bar.
