On Oct. 13, a longtime attorney from Carbon County was charged with robbing a bank near Pottsville.
Police said that morning, Steven M. Cormier, 57, of West Catawissa Street, allegedly robbed a Wells Fargo Bank in the Fairlane Village Mall in Norwegian Township. At around 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 13, Cormier approached bank employees with what turned out to be a toy gun, and said if they didn't give him money that "things (would) get ugly."After an employee filled the bag, Cormier left. But he was pulled over a few blocks away by Pottsville City Police. He was taken back to the bank, where employees identified him as the robber.Police found a plastic bag containing the stolen cash totaling $15,923, the toy gun, and clothing from the robbery in his car.He now faces a long list of felony charges, including robbery and making terroristic threats.Cormier appeared in court again in November, when he waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Appearing in a tan prison uniform and flip-flops, he didn't speak other than confirming that he wished to waive the hearing.Cormier served as general counsel for Kovatch Corp. of Nesquehoning 30 years.In published reports, Cormier's mother explained that he had been unemployed for several months before the incident, and had been responsible for taking care of her financially.Cormier's next court date has not been set.
