A wildfire spanning April 18-19 ravaged more than 800 acres along the Blue Mountain in Carbon and Lehigh counties.
Teenage ATV riders reported a fire off West Sunset Road in East Penn Township.Almost instantly, smoke could be seen 15-20 miles away and flames rose to 40 feet."This was the fire everyone was afraid of," said Cory Smith, East Penn Township fire chief. "It's easily the biggest I have seen in my 20 years with East Penn."The blaze drew over 100 firefighters from around the region.The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources used four fixed-wing air tankers and one helicopter to help fight the flames.News of the fire spread quickly on social media."The fact that the fire planes were flying over my house today and the smell of smoke in the air is not comforting in the slightest," tweeted Emily Snyder of Lehighton. "This is the most dangerous thing that happened in my 16 years of living in East Penn."No homes were damaged, according to DCNR.Mike Kern, of DCNR, said the fire was started by a dirt bike that malfunctioned."We are in discussion with the operator of the dirt bike regarding repayment of the costs to extinguish the fire," Kern said. "There are no plans to file any criminal charges at this time."Firefighting efforts cost around $100,000.Another brush fire that started on Sunday, May 3 burned 674 acres between the Francis E. Walter Dam and Jack Frost Mountain. The fire, which lasted for 10 days was contained to an area and never threatened homes.The fire was eventually ruled arson by forest fire specialist to the DCNR, Wes Keller.
