Former Schuylkill County Conservation District employee Virginia Kunigonis, 54, of Pottsville, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, Scranton, on Oct. 15 to embezzling $449,064 from the organization and was ordered to forfeit her home, $452,186, and her county retirement account.
A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled, but Judge William W. Caldwell on Nov. 3 ordered her to forfeit the home she and her husband John share at 60 Fourth Ave., as well as the money and retirement interests.Prosecutors say Kunigonis worked for the conservation district from 2007 to 2014. During that time, she's accused of forging 437 conservation district checks totaling $410,435 and of using a district credit card to pay $41,751 in personal expenses.Kunigonis admitted to state trooper Bernard J. Walasavage of the Schuylkill Haven barracks that she had taken the money to take trips to Disney, and for time share trips for herself and friends.
