Winter to begin with icy drive

While we may have dodged a White Christmas, our first real dose of winter weather expected to hit this evening could make traveling dicey, as in icy.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect from 6 tonight to 11 a.m. Tuesday, with snow and sleet accumulations of up to 1 inch, along with around a tenth of an inch of ice.AccuWeather senior meteorologist Mike LeSeney said between 5 and 7 p.m., we will begin to see some snow, sleet and freezing rain moving into the area."Roads could get slippery fairly quickly, with temperatures basically right near freezing at that time," LeSeney said. "Bridges and overpasses will probably ice up during the evening."But LeSeney said the good news is that warmer air will be filtering in overnight, and we should see temperatures rising slowly throughout the night, as the temperature is expected to rise into the lower 40s by daybreak."It's a very limited ice event," he said. "I don't think we're looking at a big problem until it starts; there's going to be that good three-hour window where roads could be treacherous, and then there's going to be that temperature rise."LeSeney said Tuesday is expected to be a milder day, with rain in the morning tapering off to showers into the afternoon, with a high of about 48.Wednesday is expected to be still rather cloudy and mild, with more arriving in the afternoon, and a high of about 50, he said.A colder pattern is expected Thursday through Saturday, as LeSeney said temperatures are expected to step down each day with colder weather. The highs are expected to be 45 on Thursday, 38 on Friday, and just 35 on Saturday, he said.Despite the expected rise in temperatures overnight, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Sean Brown cautioned motorists that they may encounter some winter weather Tuesday morning during the rush hour."Whether it's snow or sleet freezing rain, you should give yourself a little more time to get to where you're going, and realize the roads aren't going to be perfect and you need to plan ahead," Brown said.Brown said PennDOT will have a full complement of drivers on the road.Regardless, Brown said motorists need to drive appropriately."Slow down, make sure to wear your seat belt," he said."With freezing rain or sleet, the roads could be treacherous."
