Schuylkill County sentencings

Schuylkill County Judge Jacqueline Russell has sentenced five people charged locally to prison terms.

Jeffrey Najunas Sr., 44, of Shenandoah: Charged by Mahanoy Township police on April 16, 2014, with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, not using his headlights after dark, and restrictions on alcoholic beverages.Russell sentenced him to 72 hours to six months in jail, complete the Alcohol Highway Safety school, suspended his license for one year, and fined him $1,000. Najunas also was ordered to pay court costs and fees and be subjected to random urine screenings. Charges of possession, lighting violations, and restrictions on alcohol were dropped.Michael Belson, 37, of McAdoo: Charged by Kline Township police on Nov. 26, 2014 with retail theft.Russell sentenced him to pay $12.25 restitution to Boyer's supermarket, serve 19 days to 18 months in jail, with credit for 19 days served; and perform 20 hours of community service. Belson was also ordered to pay court costs and fees, and stay out of Boyer's.Joseph Fanning, 26, of Hazleton: Charged by Rush Township police with retail theft, receiving stolen property, criminal conspiracy, and obscuring his license plate on Feb. 20.Russell sentenced him to pay $398 in restitution to Walmart, serve 53 days to 12 months in jail, with credit for 53 days served; perform 20 hours of community service, and pay court costs and fees. He was also ordered to stay out of Walmart.Charges of receiving stolen property, criminal conspiracy, and obscuring his license plate were dropped.Michael Pitta, 43, of Tamaqua: Charged by Tamaqua police with possession of a controlled substance and driving without a license on Nov. 15, 2014.Russell sentenced him to serve 26 days to 18 months in jail, with credit for 26 days served. He was also ordered to perform 20 hours of community service, obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation, and pay court costs and fees.The charge of driving without a license was dropped.Gregory Ward, 45, of Pottsville: Charged by Tamaqua police with simple assault and harassment on June 8.Russell sentenced him to serve 185 days to 16 months in jail, with 185 days credit. He was also ordered to perform 20 hours of community service, and pay court costs and fees. Russell ordered Ward to complete the batterers' program and have no contact with his victim.The harassment charge was dropped.
