UGI Utilities will not be setting up a natural gas peak shaving facility behind Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall this winter.
Jim Thorpe Borough Council unanimously voted Thursday night against leasing the company land to store two 10,000-gallon liquefied natural gas tanks on its property along East 10th Street. With Jim Thorpe at the end of its pipeline, UGI said it wanted to use the gas to help meet demand for borough customers during the peak-heating season.Thursday's decision ended two months of debate on the topic, much of which centered on safety concerns from borough residents."The school district asked that we don't lease the property and neighbors near the school are against it as well," borough councilman John McGuire said of the decision to send UGI looking elsewhere.Last month, McGuire said the company was looking at an alternative site in Lehighton.UGI said the peak shaving facility would have been temporary, only set up through the winter, for several years until upgrades to its pipeline are complete.
