Dear Editor,A recent article by Amy Miller talks about the county prison already at capacity. Anyone who has been paying attention knows where this is going. We are going to have to build another new prison in the county. The current prison isn’t very old, but our leaders didn’t have a feel for the path the prison population was going to take.I suggest we stop talking about a fire training center and work on an appropriate prison solution, which everybody knows will require construction, and soon. I suggest an army barracks type setting for the so-called nonviolent prisoners, which seems to be a growing portion of the problem. Put them to work in every town and township in the county. Hard work all day, with the beneficiaries being both private sector and governmental agencies. There shouldn’t be a spot of litter anywhere. State, county and local parks cleaned up. Any labor for volunteer projects supplied.Beneficiaries of the prison labor pool would partially reimburse the county for services. Prison time should be humane but not pleasant. Finally and most importantly, improvements are necessary in the county so that our young people see opportunity and a future. These kind of improvements don’t just happen on their own. Make a difference!John FergusonTowamensing Twp.
