Schuylkill County's renovation of a former Pottsville beauty school into housing for the Children and Youth Services Agency underwent another change Wednesday.
Commissioners on Wednesday approved two change orders. The county was credited $1,928 for changing out three 30-gallon water heaters, along with brackets, drain pans ($4,082), for three 10-gallon heaters and the same accessories ($2,154).But it will pay an extra $3,738 for steel grating in an elevator pit ($225); three laminate shelves and supports in janitors' closets ($1,230); and 10 blue holly shrubs and materials for topsoil ($2,283).Commissioners in May 2013 acquired the former school, at 324 N. Centre St., for $740,000 from brothers Dale and Franklin Schoeneman. The estimated $2.6 million cost of buying and renovating the building was paid through a 2012 bond issue.Commissioners have said a $500,000 government grant will help offset the cost. The Children and Youth Services agency now occupies cramped space in a building across the street. It is expected to move into its new quarters by the end of the year. Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved a $65 a ton disposal payment for bulky items collected during the annual fall cleanup by Disposal Management Services. The payment totals $3,761, said Solid Waste & Recycling Coordinator Joseph Scribbick.Commissioners also appointed Gary Bender of Porter Township to the county Land Bank board.Bender is also Director of Community Development and Community Services for the county.
