Disposal of tires, recycling discussed
Nesquehoning Borough Council is reminding residents that dumping tires and trash in the borough is not permitted.
During Wednesday's council meeting, councilwoman Mary Fox said the town has a permit for disposing of tires that residents can purchase.Anyone who would like to get rid of a tire can apply for a permit at the borough office during business hours and will receive a sticker to place on the tire. A time will then be scheduled where borough workers will come to pick up the permitted tires.Councilman Mark Stromelo said he has seen items that cannot be recycled in and around the recycling bins on Locust Street.He reminds residents that these items should not be dumped there because they will not be accepted and they create more work for borough employees.People found dumping trash can also be fined by police if caught.Stromelo also said the borough will continue to pay for the recycling containers because it benefits the community.In a related matter, Nesquehoning received a certificate for collecting 3,125 pounds of electronics during its electronics recycling event last month.Other businessBorough council also discussed or acted on the following items:• Voiced concerns over Alpha Bio-Med Services moving into the borough because there are many questions that have yet to be answered. Councilman Frank Jacobs urged his colleagues to attend the upcoming borough zoning hearing for the project, slated for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the borough hall.• Mayor Sam Kitchko reported that for the month of October, the police collected $2,511.85; issued 47 citations and drove 2,412 miles while on patrol.• Kitchko also reported that he received a couple reports of dogs running free in borough. He reminds residents that all dogs are supposed to be on leashes and owners must pick up after dogs because have been reports of dog droppings on sidewalks.• Borough solicitor Robert Yurchak said that he received word from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation that signs on weight restrictions over a bridge along Tippets Road near the entrance of Lake Hauto can be placed at the entrance of Tippets Road.• The borough-owned apartment above borough hall on West Catawissa Street is still available.
