Girl accused of plotting mom's death to be tried as adult

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A 14-year-old Pennsylvania girl accused of plotting with her soldier boyfriend to kill her mother will be tried as an adult.

A judge in Lehigh County announced the decision at a Thursday afternoon hearing in Jamie Silvonek's case, but didn't offer details.

Silvonek is accused of conspiring with 21-year-old Army Spc. Caleb Barnes via text messages to kill her mother in the driveway of her home near Allentown.

Police say 54-year-old Cheryl Silvonek was beaten, choked and stabbed in her SUV in March after returning from a concert with the two.

Prosecutors have argued that the teenager can't be rehabilitated in the time she'd be under juvenile court's control.

A defense attorney has said Silvonek was an impressionable child under the sway of an older man and should be tried in juvenile court.
