HUNTINGDON (AP) - The Pennsylvania Game Commission is trying to find a poacher who illegally killed a black bear with a crossbow in Rothrock State Forest.

The bear's carcass was discovered by turkey hunters in the Huntingdon County forest about 80 miles northwest of Harrisburg.

Authorities say the bear likely died a slow death because it was shot with an illegal field tip on the crossbow bolt. The edges of such tips aren't sharp, and are typically used for target practice.

The animal was found two days before archery season began, which is another reason the killing was illegal.

Wildlife conservation officer Amy Nabozny says the bear was likely shot several days earlier and "suffered a slow death."

The poacher responsible could lose their hunting license and face a fine.
