Reading runs past Bears

It was no secret what Reading's game plan would be Friday night against Pleasant Valley.

Utilizing a Wing-T offense, the Red Knights have been a run-first team all season. The Bears knew it was coming, but just couldn't stop it.Reading ran its scheme to near perfection in its Eastern Conference Division IV playoff game against Pleasant Valley, rolling up 354 yards on the ground on 54 carries en route to a 25-7 victory."When they tossed the ball, when they pitched the ball, our guys on the outside would come down fast enough, but they weren't getting out of jams," said Pleasant Valley head coach Dave Pacchioni. "And that's crucial in a game like this."The Red Knights (6-5) put together several long scoring drives, keeping the Bears offense off the field and out of rhythm.Reading's first three scoring drives covered nine, 11 and 13 plays."Our o-line did an excellent job of just playing hard and doing the right things and picking up their blitzes," said Reading head coach Rob Flowers. "So it was really great to see that and they did an excellent job."The Red Knights first drive of the game ended with quarterback Elisiah Blayne, who finished with 69 yards rushing on 14 carries, scoring on a 31-yard scamper.Following a Reading fumble, Pleasant Valley (6-5) took advantage of a short field, with Austyn Borre punching it in from one yard out, a score that was set up by his 20 yard run just one play earlier. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Reading chewed up nearly five minutes on its ensuing possession, which was punctuated by KJ Boston's five yard score that gave the Red Knights a 13-7 lead at halftime.Boston had a team-high 119 yards rushing on 11 carries. The dagger might have come on Reading's opening drive of the second half, as Reading held the ball for nearly nine minutes before Blayne completed his only pass of the game on fourth and goal for a 10 yard score to Korahn Williams."Their quarterback did a wonderful job of selling it," Pacchioni said of Blayne. "Our defensive ends would say, 'He doesn't have the ball yet.' I would tell them not to worry about the dive and to just do their job."But that's what happened. It was kind of hit-or-miss at times."Following an interception, Reading scored on its shortest drive of the game, covering 25 yards in two plays. Jason Crawford got the Red Knights inside the red zone on his first carry of the drive, and the sophomore capped the series with a 19 yard run with under two minutes to play to set the final score.Despite coming up short, Pacchioni was happy to give his team, especially his upperclassmen, one more game in a Pleasant Valley uniform."This senior class is one of a kind," the coach said. "They work really hard, they do things right, and I really enjoyed this season. I'm going to miss these guys."But hopefully the underclassmen take away some of their leadership skills and work ethic. I'm hoping that next year they come into the weight room ready to go."UP NEXT. … Reading will take on Emmaus, a 61-22 winner over Williamsport, for the Eastern Conference Division IV title.DOWN AND OUT. … The Red Knights lost leading rusher Jai Whitlock early in the second quarter.
