Perschy powers Palmerton

Garrett Perschy got his first start at quarterback in a varsity game for the Palmerton Blue Bombers two years ago as a freshman, against Northern Lehigh

Two years later, Perschy is still the quarterback and player that head coach Chris Walkowiak counts on as a team leader and the guy who keeps things under control on the field.Perschy's all-around performance during Friday night's season ending 41-14 victory over Northern Lehigh earned him Times News Player of the Week. The junior not only guided the team on every scoring drive, he scored on a 12-yard keeper, threw two touchdown passes, passed for 140 yards, kicked five extra points and booted his only punt 52 yards."Garrett provides tremendous leadership and confidence for our team", Walkowiak said. "His knowledge of every position on the offense is remarkable and it is truly like having another coach on the field. "Offensively, he can make all the throws you need from a quarterback. Combine that with his running ability and he is a great offensive weapon to have on your team. He is a tremendous competitor yet through all his successes; he is humble and will always put the team above any personal accolade he may earn."And that is exactly what Perschy said when asked about his performance Friday night."Coming into the game, we knew we were going to have a big week to take down our rivals Northern Lehigh." said Perschy. "We knew it would have to start with the running game to get Mike (Stasko) and Rae (Washington) going. As the game went on however, we saw holes for me to be able to run so that's what we started doing and obviously it worked out."Perschy ran the ball himself 20 times for 84 yards leading to his one rushing touchdown. He finished the year with 393 yards rushing and five touchdowns on the ground. As far as his successful night threw the air, his total put him at 1,080 and 12 TD passes for the year and it was the second season in a row he threw for over 1,000 yards."It starts up front where the line and the backs were giving me time to throw the ball to create a great pocket," he noted. "And receivers were getting open and catching the ball and finding their way to the end zone so that was good to see."Jared Mooney hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass and Luke Yaindl wound up on the end of a 21-yard TD pass."On the running touchdown, the defense was shifted over on that play and when it was called in, I knew right away we were going to be able to score on that play so it was just a matter of me finding the end zone."As the season wound down Perschy also took over the extra point kicking duties and has been an addd plus in that departments."Special teams are a big part for us," said Perschy. "We know its a huge facet of the game. Punts are big setting up field position and extra points are huge. Especially after the Palisades game, we knew one point could determine a game so we stressed that a lot and focused on it at practice to make sure it was automatic."Throwing for over 1,000 yards in back-to-back season, was definitely a humbling experience doing it again, he added. "What it shows is that all of the hard work in the off-season pays off and I owe thanks to all of my teammates to get to this point and it's a nice attribute to carry along."
