Jim Thorpe suffers first loss
ORWIGSBRUG - On the night before All Hallows Eve, Jim Thorpe coach Mark Rosenberger had an eerie feeling. And it wasn't a good sign.
Rosenberger saw no "eye of the tiger," as he watched his undefeated Olympians board the bus and head here for a huge Anthracite Football League encounter with once beaten Blue Mountain.By the time the first 12 minutes had dwindled off the scoreboard clock, Jim Thorpe losing by 21 points. The Olympians were never able to recover in a 31-7 defeat. The loss throws Jim Thorpe's District 11 Class AAA playoffs hopes into a quandary as it will now probably need help to stay slotted as one of four teams in the postseason tournament."It's extremely disappointing the way we played," Rosenberger said before boarding the team bus for a long road home. "Obviously this wasn't what we expected. They dominated the line of scrimmage. We had no (rushing) attack."Save for a 63-yard sprint to the end zone from Robert Heller late in the second quarter, it was all Blue Mountain (8-1 AFL) and its two-headed monster with a third in the wings."We're really starting to play hard," said Cory Mabry the youthful Blue Mountain coach as he called on a trio of running backs. "We're starting to taking control of the line of scrimmage and everyone is getting their share (of carries)."Indeed that was the case in the four-touchdown onslaught and a field goal to account for the scoring. The Eagles were led by Lucas Forbes who had 84 rushing yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns. Mike Kaylan failed to dent the end zone but had 66 yards on 12 carries, and Mark Chelius picked up 47 yards on three carries.Forbes got the Eagles flying high, capping a first-quarter five-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Four minutes later, Chelius cracked the end zone on a 15-yard jet-sweep for a 14-0 lead. Matt Kaylan, twin brother of Mike, keyed the second scoring drive latching onto an 18-yard pass reception as quarterback Mason Freed completed his first five passes."They had us off balance at times the way they controlled the line of scrimmage. They have you thinking run and they were able to throw the ball very effectively," Rosenberger pointed out.Alex Zimmerman really swing the momentum pendulum when he intercepted a Thorpe pass at the Olympians' 20. Four plays later, Forbes rumbled into the end zone and Christian Puzzi's third PAT kick made it 21-0.And it could have gotten a whole lot worse for the Olympians had Connor Kerstetter held on to a 48-yard reception, fumbling at the 28 to kill a drive. Four plays after the turnover, Heller zoomed into the end zone for Thorpe's lone score at the 4:25 mark of the second quarter. The Olympians (8-1, 7-1 AFL) hopes were quickly dashed to start the second half as Blue Mountain sealed the contest with a nine-play scoring drive on its opening series. Erech Noecker went over from a yard out for the score."We can still get a share of the AFL title. We just have to regroup," Rosenberger said before leaving the Eagles Nest.SECONDARY TACKLES … Jim Thorpe's two deep safeties Antonio Madera and Robbie Geisinger were making a lot of tackles in the secondary, which meant Blue Mountain was getting to the second level with its running attack.CROWDING THE LINE … Blue Mountain took away a lot of gaps on defense and did a good job of keeping the second and third running options in check.LITTLE TIME TO PASS … Thorpe QB Dean Richards had very little breathing room when he did go back to pass. The Eagles' edge rush blew up a lot of the passing attempts.HELLER THE MAN … The senior standout for the Olympians had a stellar night leading all rushers with 114 yards on 23 carries. Other than his production, it was a total struggle.
