Fire where baby died remains under investigation

The cause and origin of a fire that resulted in the death of a 7-month-old girl Friday at an apartment in Lehighton remains under investigation.

The fire broke out just before noon Friday in a multifamily dwelling at 266 S. First St. It apparently started in the third floor of a home that is split into four apartment units.The infant, Nevah Hoffman, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Carbon County Coroner's office said.County Coroner Bruce Nalesnik said this morning that an autopsy was performed Saturday.However, Nalesnik said this morning that "the investigation is continuing.""That's all we can release at this time," Nalesnik said.The Lehighton Police Department has turned the case over to the state police. Efforts to reach the state police were unsuccessful in time for today's publication.Fire officials said they were able to put the fire out within a matter of minutes. All the residents of the home were displaced.The home sustained only minimal damage, as firefighters had the fire under control within about two minutes.State police investigators were at the scene all day Friday.The Pennsylvania State Police crime unit, along with detectives, were on scene.Also assisting at the scene were Lehighton Police Department, Franklin Township Fire Department, Mahoning Township Fire Department and Lehighton Ambulance.Services have been set for Nevah, a daughter of Shane D. Hoffman and Stacy A. (Snyder) Fronheiser.The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Miller Funeral Home, 137 Fairview St., Lehighton, with the Rev. Anthony P. Pagotto officiating.Nevah will be laid to rest at Dinkey Memorial Cemetery, Ashfield.Her full obituary appears on Page 4.
