A Schuylkill driver will be cited after he drove onto train tracks in Ryan Township.
State police at Frackville said the incident occurred at 4:15 p.m. along Route 54, just west of Grier Avenue, and in front of the Barnesville Post Office in Ryan Township.
Troopers said Carmen J. Cara, 48, of Kelayres, was eastbound on 54 and approaching a railroad grade crossing.
The red flashing railroad crossing lights were activated and as the train approached the crossing it sounded its whistle multiple times. Westbound traffic came to a halt.
Troopers said several eastbound vehicles refused to stop and wait for the train and began to cross the railroad grade crossing. Two of the violators made it safe;y but the third, Cara, did not.
As Cara crossed the tracks his 2001 Buick LeSabre was struck in the right rear by the front of the train. The train was pulling a second engine and a fully loaded hopper car at the time. Upon impact the Buick spun clockwise and came to rest in the center of the intersection facing west.
Cara and the train conductor and engineer of the train were all not injured.
Damages to the Buick were termed severe while the train sustained damage to its right corner steps and step railing. Assisting troopers at the scene were Rush Township police and volunteers from Ryan Township Fire Company and Hometown Fire Company fire police.
Troopers said Cara would be cited for violating the flashing train crossing signals.
