Colts give Dakosty 300th career victory

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - 'Twas a night to remember.

The coach got the customary kiss from his wife. The coach got a Gatorade bath. And the coach got his 300th career victory.Stan Dakosty, the legendary architect at one of the most highly successful football programs in Pennsylvania, got to cradle his 300th victory last evening in a huge Anthracite Football League clash.Riding the legs of senior running back KJ Snerr and a dominating performance at the point of attack, the Colts (4-3, AFL 3-3) handed out an impressive 41-14 shellacking of Schuylkill Haven, enabling Dakosty to attain the milestone victory."I really, truly wasn't concerned about it," Dakosty said emphatically afterwards when asked about his teams' ability to deliver a win that ranks with some of the best coaches in the Keystone state."What is more important is we got our fourth win, we got off the schnied but really we just focused on win number four," Dakosty insisted as he stood dripping wet.Certainly there was angst throughout a three-game losing streak. Marian was dipping into the fourth spot of the District 11, Class A playoff chase and was faced with almost a "must win," against the Hurricanes (4-3, AFL 3-3), a team that was riding the crest of a three-game winning streak."We've been waiting for this win, our guys persevered, we evaluate our kids every week and a lot of kids stepped up tonight," said Dakosty. The key to a superb start, one in which saw the Colts reel off a 20-0 first quarter lead, came on a planned fake punt from Aaron DeAngelo. Marian was set to kick it away after the game's first offensive possession. The Colts drive sputtered at the Haven 42, but DeAngelo took the snap and immediately broke to his right and barely got the needed six yards to sustain the drive. Two plays later, Snerr darted 31 yards for the first of his three touchdowns."This was such a big way for us to win," Snerr said as he finally got back on the field after incurring a knee injury two weeks ago against Blue Mountain. Snerr was unbelievable at times. He would rush for a career high 225 yards on 20 carries, hit the end zone three times, all in the first half. While Snerr was the focal point of the offense, quarterback Ethan Kuczynski was the leader of the pack. He would cleverly keep Haven's defense in check, adding two six pointers himself. Kuczynski ran in a score from 11 yards out to end the first-quarter deluge, then played receiver latching on to a halfback pass from Snerr making it a 34-7 lead late in the third quarter. Before Kuczynski's second touchdown, Snerr pranced four yards to cap a 13-play, 89-yard scoring drive for a 27-0 lead."We had so many great efforts (this season), we just didn't finish games, (we) played hard but just came up short," said DakostyNot this time. For it truly was a night to remember - Stan Dakosty's 300th was well worth the wait!LOST IN THE HYSTERIA … Marian's defense was stellar and superb all evening, from Ryan Malarkey with six tackle to Kyle Plesh with eight tackles, DeAngelo seven stops and Josh Skotek with seven as well.TOUGH SLOGGING… Schuylkill Haven came in with a 4-2 record and averaged 240 yards rushing. Marian stuffed the run allowing 123 yards on 30 carries. The Colts allowed the 'Canes all of two first downs through the first two quarters.PUNTING GAME … There were only two punts in the entire game - one from each team. Reason? Three fumbles, one pass interception coughed up by Haven. DeAngelo, Skotek and Thomas each had fumble recoveries, and Snerr picked off a pass.RUNNING TO DAYLIGHT … Dakosty said that his staff switched things up in the blocking scheme, and that allowed Snerr to roll with his 225 yards. "We saw some things (on film) and we changed our blocking and that allowed KJ to get to the edge (easily) at times."
