Blue Raiders cruise past Shenandoah

Sam Bonner was looking for a quick start.

And that's exactly what he got.Bonner's Tamaqua squad scored three touchdowns in the game's first six minutes Friday night and cruised to a 51-8 Anthracite League win against Shenandoah Valley."The last few times we deferred when we won the toss but tonight, instead of starting on defense, we decided to take the ball," said the Blue Raider head coach."We wanted to get things started fast. I thought we had a good first drive and then we followed that with a good defensive series."Tamaqua needed just 11 offensive plays in those first three scoring drives to grab a 21-0 advantage.Bud Moyer, who finished the evening with 227 yards on just 13 carries, capped the opening series with a 35-yard scoring run. After a three-and-out by the Raider defense and a short punt, Moyer again broke free for a 42-yard tally."He may not have that blazing speed but in the open field he makes good cuts," said Bonner of his senior tailback. "He's a hard guy to bring down and has a nose for where to find the hole."There are times where you think he could have kept running one way but he seems to always do a good job of cutting it back and finding the open lane. He's a great kid and he's been our workhorse. I'm sure he didn't have many carries but you know if you get the ball in his hands he's eventually going to score."Moyer wasn't the only one to get in on the scoring parade.Nick Breiner, Thad Zuber and Daylon Barron all reached the end zone during the first half as Tamaqua (4-3; 3-3) built a commanding 38-0 lead."We've been getting contributions from a lot of players," said Bonner. "We have a few shifty kids that are really starting to contribute more on offense."Thad Zuber also did a great job at quarterback ... He did a good job of running the football. If he sees an open lane he takes it, and that gives us another dimension. He's got pretty good legs and is an athletic kid and he made some nice runs for us."The Raider ground game excelled all night long, piling up over 400 yards.Moyer added to his total early in the second half, slipping a tackle and going 34 yards for his third touchdown and a 44-0 bulge."This makes two weeks in a row that we played mistake-free ball," said Bonner. "We're not making the mistakes we did early in the season and with the meat-grinder we have coming up, that will have to continue. We know the competition is going to get a lot fiercer coming up."CAUSING TURNOVERS .... While Tamaqua didn't turn the ball over, its defense had three takeaways. Dylan Dannenfelser and Josh Gordon had interceptions while Kyle Oliphant had a fumble recovery.DEFENDING THE PASS ... Shenandoah (2-5) attemped 32 passes and ran just 13 times. "It always worries you because they're going to throw the ball 25-30 times a game," said Bonner of his opponent. "When you play a team like that, they make a couple big plays and they're right back in the game. Our secondary did a good job of keeping things under control."KICKING GAME ... Thorn Devlin not only kicked five extra points but also nailed a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter.MOYER-MANIA ... Of Moyer's 13 carries, six of them went for over 20 yards. The senior passed the 1,000-yard mark this year and also eclipsed 100 points.GETTING DEFENSIVE ... Only 10 of Shenandoah's 45 plays gained five-or-more yards.FABULOUS FIELD ... Tamaqua celebrated Homecoming Friday night. The festivities were made all the more special with an A-plus effort by those who prepared the field, which was in excellent condition.
