The Large Flower Heads tried different genres before finding their niche in the groovy music of the '60s.
The Lehigh Valley-based band will bring attendees at the Palmerton Community Festival back to the days of long hair and bell bottoms. They are set to lead off the entertainment at this year's festival, playing the main stage Friday night at 5:15 p.m.Drummer/Vocalist Moe Jerant says that attendees should be prepared to sing and dance along to some of their favorite hits."It's gonna get a little contagious, and you're not going to be able to help yourself," Jerant said.Jerant has been drumming with bands for the better part of two decades. Before they played '60s music, the Large Flowerheads dabbled with other genres - in the '90s they were a grunge act playing music from bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.But by taking it back to the '60s, they were able to connect with a larger group of fans."It's all about making people happy when you play in front of them, it's all about seeing people smile when you play a song they know and it brings back memories," she said.Recently, a woman battling cancer approached Jerant at a show and told her that the band's performances have helped her take her mind off her treatments."This will sound like I'm on a soapbox, but people are transformed by what we do," she said. "The band is about taking this great music to as many people as we can."The crowd's energy also helps keep the band going, Jerant said. She says the feeling of looking out on a pleased audience is a powerful one."It's hard to describe that, to have someone understand that without experiencing it, but we have some intensely loyal fans, and we adore them as much as they adore us, we couldn't do what we're doing without them," she said.
