The Lehighton 150 Celebration Committee will hold The History of Lehighton, Part 2, at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pfc. Clyde R. Houser Jr. Building/Borough Annex.
Lehighton's Sesquicentennial will occur next year. The committee wants to raise $55,000 for an eight-day celebration to commemorate the 150 years of the borough. The festivities are scheduled for June 25-July 2, 2016.This week, we'll once again be publishing tidbits of Lehighton history in conjunction with the celebration committee.TODAY'S FACTS:• In 1888, Daniel Wieand constructed the Lehighton Opera House.• On April 30, 1917, Lehighton's then police Chief, William Swartz, was shot by a drunk man at the Carbon House. The man had lost his job at the L.V. Yards earlier that day and had purchased a revolver to take revenge on the co-worker who had turned him in to his supervisor for drinking on the job. When Chief Swartz arrived to question the man, he was shot. The chief died four days later, leaving behind his wife and eight children. He was 48 years old.• The
G.A.R. (General Army of the Republic) was the first Veteran's Organization in Lehighton. It was replaced with the American Legion in 1919.Look for more tidbits of history to be published every day through Friday.
