Man charged in Schuylkill brought gun to court

A Wilkes-Barre man faces a felony gun charge after he allegedly brought a handgun into court for his preliminary hearing on misdemeanor drug charges Wednesday.

Brandon Darius, 21, of South Hancock Street was scheduled to appear before Magisterial District Judge Paul Roberts for a hearing on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia on Wednesday afternoon, according to court records.According to a criminal complaint filed by Kingston police: A Kingston police officer was called to testify at the preliminary hearing.Prior to the hearing, Roberts told the officer there was an active arrest warrant for Darius from McAdoo.The officer arrested Darius based on the warrant, which court records indicate is for misdemeanor drug charges.As he searched Darius, the officer found a 9 mm handgun in a backpack Darius was carrying.He also found five bags of suspected marijuana. Darius was charged with a felony count of possession of a prohibited firearm, as well as misdemeanor counts of possession of a firearm in a court facility and possession of a small amount of marijuana.He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge James Tupper on Thursday and sent to Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 19 before Roberts.
