Carbon field day set for Aug. 29
The Bowmanstown Rod and Gun Club will be holding the Carbon County Youth Field Day at 525 Club Road in Palmerton from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 29.
The possibility of holding the field day was discussed at the club's January meeting, when it was pointed out that there are no such events in Carbon County for kids to participate in outdoor activities. The youth field day is also a chance for kids ages 9 through 16 to learn about hunting and trapping in a hands-on way."The commissioned education courses nowadays are mostly PowerPoint presentations, which make it hard to hold a kid's attention. With days like this we can teach them and let them have fun," Bowmanstown Rod and Gun Club Committee Chair Michael Gontar said.Events include a .22 rifle shoot, muzzleloader shoot, archery, tomahawk throw, fishing, trapping, and turkey call. The kids will be put into groups and rotated through the activities throughout the day. While the firing ranges will be available, kids will not have to shoot if they do not want to.The youth field day is fully booked at 75 kids registered, and parents must be accompanying the youth."We made the cutoff at 75 to keep it at a smaller group for more personal instruction," Gontar said.Multiple clubs from the area and beyond will also be helping with the event, including the Nesquehoning Conservation Club, District 10 Pennsylvania Trappers Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, Pennsylvania Game Commission, and Bowmanstown Archers.About 50 volunteers helping out, including instructors from the NRA teaching the youngsters how to appropriately handle firearms.Refreshments will be provided, and each child will receive a shirt. There will also be a drawing for prizes at the end, with each kid getting a prize.Registration and cancellation deadline is Aug. 15.For more information, email
