A Schuylkill County man is being sought on a felony warrant after he fled from police into a wooded area west of Tamaqua.
State police at Frackville said troopers and other local law enforcement officers attempted to serve paperwork of Joseph Dwain Hartranft, 54, of 614 Old Route 209, in the village of Newkirk, Schuylkill Township, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at his residence.Hartranft became noncompliant and retreated inside his home. A short time later he left the home carrying a long gun and ran into a wooded area near his home.Troopers said it was learned that Hartranft is prohibited from ownership of a firearm.About 7:30 p.m. troopers obtained a felony arrest warrant for Hartranft from on-call District Judge Steven Bayer of Tamaqua.Troopers said Hartranft is still at-large. Anyone coming into contact with him is encouraged to contact police by calling 9-1-1 or the barracks at 570-874-5300. Hartranft is believed to be still armed and troopers warn anyone coming into contact with him to use extreme caution.Troopers did not state what was the nature of the paperwork they attempted to serve on Hartranft.
