Kidder firefighters save elderly resident

Jacob Szabara Sr. and his son, Anthony Szabara, are busy guys.

They both live in Kidder Township, but work out of the area. Both are firefighters with the Kidder Township Volunteer Fire Company. To save on the cost of commuting, the two travel together to and from work. The senior Szabara works in Philadelphia, the younger in Phoenixville. On Wednesday morning as the two were making their way into Phoenixville they spotted smoke."We were driving down Fairmont onto Dayton and we saw smoke over the roadway," Jacob Szabara said."We pulled up and 237/239 Dayton Street was on fire.""The family from 237 was out of the house. The flames were tearing through the third floor and so I called 911," he said. "Then a neighbor told us that there was an elderly lady in 239 who hadn't made it out."Jacob and his son did not wait for the fire department to respond. They entered the home at 239 and found an 85-year-old woman who identified herself as Sophia in the front living room of the home.According to Szabara, Sophia is almost blind and had difficulty getting around. He said he doubted if she could have managed to leave the home on her own."I am very proud, but not surprised, that they risked their lives to save others. It is an example of showing their dedication to the community and to firefighting," said Kidder Volunteer Fire Company Chief John Devine.Local authorities are blaming a lightning strike for starting the blaze.
